Gin Rummy Frequently Asked Questions

Rules & Setup
How many cards do you deal in Gin Rummy?
Each player receives 10 cards. The remaining cards form the stock pile, and the top card is turned face up to start the discard pile. The non-dealing player has the first option to take the upcard.
How do turns work in Gin Rummy?
Each turn has two steps: first, draw one card (either the top card of the discard pile or the top card of the stock pile); then, discard one card face up. You cannot end a turn without discarding.
Can you pick up more than one card from the discard pile?
No. In standard Gin Rummy, you may only take the single top card from the discard pile. Unlike some Rummy variants (like Rummy 500), you cannot dig through the pile.
What happens when the stock pile runs out?
If only two cards remain in the stock pile and neither player has knocked, the hand is declared a draw. No points are scored and a new hand is dealt. Some house rules allow reshuffling the discard pile instead.
Is the Ace high or low in Gin Rummy?
The Ace is always low in Gin Rummy — worth 1 point. It can only be used at the low end of a run (A-2-3), never at the high end (Q-K-A).
Melds, Sets & Runs
What is a meld in Gin Rummy?
A meld is a valid combination of cards. There are two types: a set (three or four cards of the same rank in different suits, e.g. 8♠ 8♥ 8♦) and a run (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, e.g. 4♣ 5♣ 6♣).
What is deadwood?
Deadwood refers to cards in your hand that don’t belong to any meld. The total point value of your deadwood determines whether you can knock and how scoring works after a knock. Aces = 1 pt, number cards = face value, face cards (J, Q, K) = 10 pts each.
Can a card belong to two melds at once?
No. Each card can only belong to one meld. You cannot use the same card to satisfy both a set and a run.
Knocking, Gin & Undercut
When can you knock in Gin Rummy?
You can knock whenever your total deadwood is 10 points or fewer. Knocking is always optional — even if you qualify, you may choose to keep playing.
What is going Gin?
Going Gin means arranging all 10 cards into valid melds with zero deadwood. This earns you your opponent’s total deadwood points plus a 25-point Gin bonus. Critically, your opponent cannot lay off any cards against your melds after a Gin.
What is an undercut?
An undercut occurs when the knocker’s deadwood is greater than or equal to the non-knocker’s deadwood. The non-knocker wins, receiving the point difference plus a 25-point undercut bonus. Always verify your opponent’s deadwood before knocking if you think the gap is close.
Can you lay off cards after Gin?
No. Laying off is only permitted after a standard knock. When a player goes Gin, their melds are sealed and the opponent must count their full unmelded cards as deadwood.
Scoring
How many points do you play to in Gin Rummy?
The standard game is played to 100 points. Once a player crosses 100, the hand is completed, final bonuses are applied, and the overall winner is determined.
What are the end-game bonuses?
Three bonuses are applied at game’s end: the game bonus (100 points for the winner), the box bonus (25 points for each individual hand won), and potentially a shutout bonus (if the winner won without the opponent winning any hand, the game bonus doubles to 200 points).
What is a shutout (or blitz/schneider)?
A shutout — also called a blitz or schneider — occurs when one player wins the entire game without their opponent winning a single hand. The winner’s game bonus doubles from 100 to 200 points.
Strategy & Skill
Is Gin Rummy a game of luck or skill?
Predominantly skill. While card distribution involves luck, the best players consistently win 60–65% of their games against average opponents. Skill elements include hand evaluation, card counting, opponent reading, knocking decisions, and discard strategy.
What is the best beginner strategy?
Focus on three principles: discard high cards early (10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings that aren’t building toward a meld), watch what your opponent picks up from the discard pile (it reveals their hand), and don’t knock with high deadwood (7–10 points) unless you’re confident your opponent has more.
What is Oklahoma Gin?
Oklahoma Gin is the most popular variation. The rank of the first upcard sets the maximum deadwood allowed to knock for that hand. A 5 upcard means only players with 5 or fewer deadwood points can knock. If the upcard is a spade, all points that hand are doubled.
Playing Online
Can I play Gin Rummy online for free?
Yes. GinRummy.cards offers free browser-based Gin Rummy — no downloads, no accounts, no cost. Play against an AI opponent at any time.
How many players can play Gin Rummy?
Standard Gin Rummy is a two-player game. For more players, consider Three-Hand Gin (3 players) or Partnership Gin (4 players in teams of 2).
