52How to Play — Quick Reference
New to Gin Rummy? The goal is to form melds (matched card combinations) from your 10-card hand while minimizing deadwood (unmatched cards). You win a hand by:
- Knocking — when your total deadwood is 10 points or fewer, you may end the hand by knocking. The player with less deadwood wins the difference in points.
- Going Gin — arrange all 10 cards into valid melds with zero deadwood for a 25-point bonus. Your opponent cannot lay off any cards after Gin.
Valid melds:
- Set — three or four cards of the same rank in different suits (e.g., 8♠ 8♥ 8♦)
- Run — three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 5♣ 6♣ 7♣)
Card values for deadwood: Ace = 1, number cards = face value, face cards (J/Q/K) = 10 points each.
Tips for Beginners
- Discard high isolated cards early — Kings, Queens, Jacks, and 10s carry 10 points each. If they’re not building toward a meld in the first few turns, let them go.
- Watch what your opponent picks up — every card they take from the discard pile tells you what they want. Avoid discarding cards that complete their melds.
- Stay flexible — middle-value cards (5s through 8s) can connect to more melds than extreme cards. Keep them longer while trimming isolated high cards.
- Don’t wait for perfect — knocking with 8–10 deadwood is often better than chasing Gin while your opponent approaches Gin themselves.
