What Is Straight Gin?
Straight Gin (also called Pure Gin) is the most demanding variation of Gin Rummy. It follows all standard rules with one important exception: there is no knocking. The only way to end a hand is to go Gin — melding all 10 of your cards with zero deadwood.
This seemingly small change fundamentally transforms the game into a much more strategic and patience-testing experience.

Everything else remains the same: dealing, card values, melds, drawing, discarding.
Scoring in Straight Gin
Since the only possible outcome (other than a draw) is Gin:
- The winner scores: Opponent’s full deadwood value + 25-point Gin bonus
- No layoffs: As with standard Gin, the non-winning player cannot lay off cards
- Draws: Common in Straight Gin. When the stock dwindles to two cards, the hand is a draw with no points awarded
Game plays to 100 points with standard end-of-game bonuses.
Strategy Changes
Patience Is Non-Negotiable
In standard Gin Rummy, you can knock early with a decent hand. In Straight Gin, you must complete every single meld. This means:
- Expect longer hands — 15-20+ turns is normal
- Draws happen frequently — don’t get frustrated when hands end without a winner
- Every card must contribute — no room for even a single deadwood card
Defend Relentlessly
Since your opponent must achieve a perfect hand, your defensive tools are even more powerful:
- Holding a single key card can block their Gin entirely
- Track suits and ranks religiously — if you know they need the 8♦ and you have it, never let it go
- Safe discards are paramount — one mistake can hand your opponent their final card
Flexibility Over Speed
Build your hand to have multiple possible Gin arrangements:
- Keep “triangle” cards that fit into multiple melds
- Don’t commit too early to a specific meld arrangement
- Maintain at least two viable paths to Gin at all times
Card Counting Is Essential
In Straight Gin, knowing what’s available is crucial:
- If a key card you need has been discarded, you need to pivot immediately
- Track which cards are in the discard pile, which have been picked up, and which remain unseen
- Late in the hand, you may be able to deduce your opponent’s exact cards
Stock Pile Management
With longer hands, the stock pile becomes a factor:
- Monitor the remaining stock — if fewer than 10 cards remain, assess whether Gin is realistic
- If you’re close to Gin, a draw (0 points) may be better than switching strategy
- Sometimes deliberately slowing your draw to prevent a draw can give you more chances
When to Play Straight Gin
Straight Gin is ideal for:
- Experienced players looking for a greater challenge
- Players who enjoy deep, strategic card play
- Longer game sessions with more tension and drama
You might prefer standard Gin if:
- You enjoy quicker hands
- You like the tactical decision of when to knock
- You prefer more varied outcomes per hand
Tips for Success
- Never force a Gin arrangement — if it’s not coming together, pivot to a new plan
- Watch the 7-card melds — a 4-card run plus a 3-card set plus a 3-card set is the classic Gin combination
- Remember 10 cards must be arranged — the math works as: 3+3+4, 3+3+4, or 4+3+3 (sets/runs of different sizes)
- Be willing to accept draws — in Straight Gin, a draw isn’t a failure; it’s a common result
- Defense can win games — even if you can’t go Gin frequently, preventing your opponent from going Gin keeps you in it
